A new addition to our fibre family: Leonardo!

Less than two years after the first introduction of our “paper fibres” we are proud to introduce you
to the youngest member of our range of viscose fibre specialities: Leonardo!
The main characteristic of Leonardo is its extremely flat cross section, with a width to thickness ratio of 40 to 1. At the same time the fibre exhibits an extremely even fibre surface with completely parallel sides and an extremely regular cross section.
Leonardo can be produced up to three times thinner than existing flat viscose fibres.
This, together with the even fibre surface and the resulting modified light refraction properties delivers a uniquely transparent fibre from which a range of different end applications such as security and filter papers can benefit.
Leondardo Fibre
While it is generally possible to control a paper′s properties such as bulk, tear length, tear resistance or porosity by adding viscose fibres, tests have shown that viscose fibres with a flat cross section can improve the physical properties even more.
This is a result of the better inter–fibre contact and the better fibre bonding of flat fibres in comparison with regular round fibres. With our fibre specialities it is even possible to produce a 100% viscose paper which is not possible with standard cross–section viscose fibres.
Furthermore, the paper′s strength benefits from the use of thin fibres – another advantage offered by Leonardo. Finally, an anionic modification of the viscose fibres can increase the positive influence of adding fibre to the paper.
At the moment we are further investigating the advantages Leonardo fibres can bring to a range of different end products. Among the projects we are following up, filter and security papers seem to benefit particularly from from the addition of Leonardo. As always, we work in close cooperation with our customers – to ensure that we offer marketable solutions which work on an industrial scale.

Leondardo Fibre

A trip to Bavaria: thank you for your visit!

Approximately 30 attendees of PIRA′s Specialty Paper Conference took up our invitation to a
pre-conference tour and visited our production plant in Kelheim. Thanks to all of you for a very inspiring day and for your positive feedback.
We are happy that – in spite of the long journey – you enjoyed the day!

Test results from Hohenstein Institutes
prove positive influence of Viscose fibres in paper

The successful development of a new fibre is a always a big step forward for us – but it’s only the first step. Once the design of the fibre has been finallyfixed and we are able to produce it on a large scale, we need to know all about its properties and about its effects in different kinds of end uses. In the context of a research project of the Hohenstein Institutes our fibres Dante, Bellini, Verdi and Bramante underwent a programme of extensive tests.
The first results were presented by our Dr. Ingo Bernt and Dr. Jan Beringer (Hohenstein Institutes) at this year’s man–made fibre congress in Dornbirn: Our fibres' positive influence on the mechanical properties of a nonwoven or a paper and the significantly increased absorption capacity stand out in particular.

A new team for new businesses

To emphasize the importance of our new fibre developments and the resulting new business possibilities, we are glad to introduce our team “New Business”.
Sebastian Basel, Commercial Manager New Business, joined us in October 2011, while Dr. Philipp Wimmer, with us since November 2010, will counterpart on the R&D side as Technical Manager New Business.
Our team “New Business” will be happy to help you with any information about our fibres – and is always interested in your requirements regarding our fibres in your end product!

Merry Christmas!

The end of the year is always a moment to look back: in the last two years our “paper fibres” have become an significant and growing part of our business. In 2012 we will continue to focus our efforts on the various new possibilities that the use of viscose speciality fibres can bring you and your business.
All of us at Kelheim Fibres join in sending you best wishes for the holiday and the new year!
